Those are awesome for most places, but soooooo heavy if you need to collapse it and carry it on stairs. Plus sometimes too wide for narrow city sidewalks in Europe. I feel like I have PhD in travel strollers after the past two weeks! 🤣🤣😬

Yes, you do! And the one year old will be almost free if she flys on your lap.

Oh man. I bet I could convince Kev to do this... although maybe a little actually crazy with 6 kids under 9 including an 8 month old?? Seriously, so awesome though!!! Maybe just maybe. I love how you said you guys are in no waiting mood... I think sometimes we get into that mode too easily over here!

“Easy is not our goal. Heaven is.”

The best line.

Also Se Josephine was such a fun guest on Abiding together. I LOVE that you linked two more ways to listen to her. Thank you.

My rec, as if you asked, is the Matt Fradd interview with Fr Andrew Dalton about the Shroud of Turin. I was talking to Fr Jason Charon one day and it came up and he said this was “life-changing”- or cannot use that term without piquing my interest. I keep telling everyone about it and it is 3 hrs long but I just listen in the car or wherever. I’m on my second listen of it, it’s THAT good

I'm so glad you and your family had a beautiful pilgrimage - thank you for sharing it with us! We managed a trip to Our Lady of Champion in Wisconsin at the end of our 3 day summer vacation (I guess you could call it a babymoon before #3 arrives in September) and the graces were palpable. I'm definitely putting Quebec on my list of places to travel with my family. Praying for all of you!

Also: here in the UK, UppaBaby is a hugely popular stroller brand. Very well made but not necessarily lightweight! When I lived in Rome, a friend came to visit with her baby and just brought a $50 used stroller she had bought on Craigslist, so that if it got damaged either on the plane or in the city, it wouldn’t matter. For some people that might be the best way to go!

Thank you for sharing your words and wisdom! Writing questions: (1) what kind of advance/ royalties are typical from Catholic publishers? (I know they may vary amongst themselves and also differ from secular publishers at times.) (2) How much and what type of marketing will they do? A lot of authors now say they have to do all of their own marketing... so (3) what are the publishers actually getting and giving in exchange for your time, talent, etc? (4) How many copies are a “good sell”? I’ve heard 5k is good. Is that true? Lastly, I know you may not want to answer this publicly but (5) would you have any hesitations about signing with Ascension Press? Again thank you for sharing your experience!

Would love to hear more thoughts on shiny happy people because I watched it and I couldn’t figure out how people with such good intentions went so wrong and how I could avoid those kinds of mistakes that for my family.

Currently writing from Slovakia /Poland on a family pilgrimage. We made the same trip 10 years ago when the kids were 7, 6, 4, 2, and 1. That pilgrimage, like the many others, left marks on their hearts but not many memories. Both are valuable but I am enjoying the trip more with older, more conversant kids. I was wished "a nice vacation and good pilgrimage" before we left. Definitely two different things.

Emily I love hearing about your travels! I would LOVE to go to Assisi with you and your family. I've had it on my heart to go there next spring or summer! Can't wait to hear more about the plans for that trip.

I have a Peg Perego single stroller that is by far the easiest, lightest stroller I've ever used. I don't love the under-basket, but it's an older model and I imagine that feature has been improved. They are pricey strollers for sure, but I think worth it. This summer I finally jumped on the Wonder Wagon train and I love it more than I imagined... Though I'm not sure how that would go on cobblestone streets. Worth looking into though? I love the 3 point harness feature and the push-or-pull option, as well as how easy it is to fold and unfold. Plus all the room for STUFF.

This was lovely and landed in my inbox at just the right moment! We are flying states away tomorrow for my sister in laws wedding with our 2 year old and 5 month old and I was feeling a lot of "travel with little kids dread" - this was a great reminder of the graces that can be found amidst the chaos. Thank you for sharing!

Loved this post.❤️ We are returning to Québec in August for a pilgrimage . (St.André & St.Joseph pray for us.) We were there 15 years ago on our honeymoon, which we nicknamed "The God Tour" because we spent entire days roaming Montréal & Québec City for Catholic churches. My husband was a lapsed Catholic and I had not converted yet. Fast-forward, we are taking our 12 year old with us this time and praying for discernment as we have just finished our propaedeutic year of the diaconate. We have been back to Montréal & QC in years past, with our daughter, son, and parents. We fed the kids at every Cora crêpe house and poutine place we could find. I have breastfed while walking down cobbled stairs elbowing off bustling tourists and abandoned the stroller in favour of an hour of running across the Plains of Abraham without fear of injury or loss. It was sheet joy. Travelling with children is as you have detailed - harrowing but oh, so beautiful. We are encountering costs beyond anything we have ever seen for hotels & stays in Montréal. Because we are "three" and our son is twelve, we also cannot stay without two rooms in some pilgrimage accommodations. We are staying at the John XXIII Pavilion for two nights but cannot validate renting two rooms at Le Monastère des Augustines in QC (a dream). I would recommend it to couples or those with two teens or more. Would you recommend the house you rented on the Île d'Orléans for a couple & teen? We have yet to find one that is truly close to St.Anne's and on the island. (All accommodation recommendations welcome.) God-willing, we will see you in Rome next year. Regardless, I'll take your intentions to the steps of the Scala Santa at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré.
