Some really great take aways, Emily and Co. I really appreciated Chris and Casey’s voices and perspectives.

I actually had a great convo with my husband about penances (doing something as opposed to sacrificing something). I likened it to the current trend of people calling funerals a “celebration of life”. We are so afraid, as a culture, of pain or sacrifice, that we can’t even call a funeral a funeral! Anyway, I also loved the reminder of the fact that a penance should be concrete and measurable. So good. I had a good convo with my 10 yr old about this yesterday.

I appreciated the discussion on helping the poor and treating them with dignity. Awesome that your kids interact with those you all meet outside the church and know their names.

I enjoyed your conversation about fish fries! I have strong feelings. We are so lucky to have two great fish fries near us (in the beach cities of Los Angeles). They are both fried cod with french fries, given by the Knights at each parish. There is sheet cake (with a note to only take one piece per person, God is watching) and sometimes red punch. They are extremely joyful, jovial events, and a core memory from my own childhood, now a core memory for my kids. They willingly give up sweets and screens, embrace the extra prayers, knowing that for five Fridays in a row they are included (and cherished by the older folks) in this near-liturgical event for dinner. If we manage to close it down, they are eager helpers in the Catholic ritual of chair stacking and table folding, emptying trash and relining cans. It's just the best.

Enjoyed this so much! I was chuckling at the discussion of Eastern vs. Western Lenten practices. I formally transferred to the Byzantine rite, and we've got this lovely culture in our home of "breathing with both lungs," so we have a lot of conversations about this. My eparchy has relaxed the traditional fast quite a bit, but it is still encouraged to the degree to which individuals are able. Maybe in another season of life, I'll give it a whirl ;)

Wow, so many gems in this episode! I appreciated your suggestions of practical ways to help the poor. Alms to the poor as atonement will stick with me. And Emily, your words on failure preventing us from thinking too highly of ourselves! So good. A much-needed invitation to humility.

As someone who was feeling only this morning how badly I have already “failed” Lent, I needed to hear this. What an excellent conversation! And what good discussions on treating the poor with dignity and examples on how to help, and where to go to find people to help. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
