I think you did a good job of explaining the gluttony aspects. I think this sin of "daintiness" further creates a discordance between people. I've heard (and read) people saying "I don't eat at potlucks unless I made it." "I don't like meal trains because you never know what people are going to serve you." and while they sometimes have a good reason (one person's whole office got food poisoning) I would say that it's the exception, not the rule. I think not eating at potlucks creates these divisions and we lose the chance to eat together. We lose the chance to feed one another. I think it's a bit of our humanity stripped away.

I'd also say that I am a paid subscriber and I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. Your writings have brought me to a different level of learning about my faith, and urged me to better and harder readings. So thank you. It's a pleasure to read your essays.

Hi Emily!! I loved your book ‘Beautiful Bones’. Also, enjoying your essays ❤️

I am on a plant based diet for health reasons and it has been very effective. However, it is hard for some gatherings. I usually bring my stuff or the hostess offers some options. From your description, it does seem like a ‘dainty’ diet. Your thoughts???

It all depends on what the health issue is and how much you would be affected by occasionally going off it. So, if the health issue is super serious and the diet relieves debilitating pain (pain that comes back immediately if you cheat), then you’re not being dainty. If it’s less serious and the occasional variation from it has minimal or minor effects, then maybe you could be less particular from time to time. But only you can be the judge. I tend to think about it all in terms of charity. For example, I might avoid gluten most of the time at home to avoid joint pain, but have pizza at a friends’ or a piece of my son’s birthday cake for the sake of not causing difficulty for a host and for the sake of fellowship with my family. The result might be a few more aches for a couple days, but nothing serious. If the pain suddenly became a lot more debilitating and an inconvenience to my family, then I would need to avoid gluten more strictly out of charity for them. But that is only how I would make the call. You might have other things to consider.

The beautiful image at the bottom of your post- looks like bread, burrata/mozzarella and and a green chickpea mixture... do you have the recipe?!

It will be in the cookbook coming out in the Spring. I photographed it, but still need to write it all down.
