Also…hilarious that anyone would feel bad for Catholics right now. I feel like these are the moments that everyone wants to be Catholic, the whole world watching along with us.

Excellent read as we all await white smoke and “habemus papam”!

Praying for your family in this transition. That is a great and beautiful leap of faith.

my husband and I have made consistent shifts toward that Wendell Berry goal and though it is very difficult and with sacrifices, it's beautiful when it all comes together - and it's so very worth it. Excited for you and your husband! And thank you for these insightful, measured thoughts on the conclave!!

After listening to your Visitation Session with Rob Corzine, I’m at peace about whatever cardinal will be chosen as the next Pope. I continue praying, and asking the Holy Spirit to guide the hearts of the Cardinals.

Emily, in case you see this, I’m in a knot over trying to your phrasing “the pope we want or the pope we deserve”. Don’t we deserve the Good Shepherd, the words of Jesus is last week’s Gospel to Peter - tend my sheep, feed my sheep? I know so so many faithful Catholics and my first thought was, yeah! the Pope we all deserve!

And i also just assumed “the Pope we want” is a euphemism for a Pope who wouldn’t be the right Pope for us, like since when do sheep want what’s right for them! Thats why they have shepherds?

But then seeing this phrasing repeated over and over, I have a friend who said she actually cried with anguish when he was announced because “we got the Pope we deserved” not the pope she wanted who was Cardinal Sarah, I realized I must have it backwards. Do we really get a bad Pope as punishment? Is that a thing theologically? If you have time to sort this for me I would greatly appreciate it as I’m feeling a bit dim!
